The short answer
Replace carpet when cleaning no longer brings it back: stains that return after professional cleaning, walkways that stay flat and matted, odors that come back, or a pad that has broken down. If the carpet is in good shape apart from ripples or one damaged spot, repair it instead.
Start with a professional clean
A lot of carpet that looks ready for replacement is actually just dirty. Soil works deep into the fibers and pad, and household cleaning only gets the top. Before you spend money on new carpet, a proper professional clean will tell you what you’re really dealing with. If the carpet bounces back, you’ve saved the cost of replacing it.
Signs it’s time to replace
1. Stains that come back
Some stains (pet urine that reached the pad, dyes, bleach) can’t be fully removed. If spots reappear after professional cleaning, or they’re spread across the room, cleaning has done all it can.
2. Matted, flattened walkways
Traffic lanes that stay crushed and dull after cleaning mean the fibers themselves have worn down. Cleaning can lift soil, but it can’t rebuild worn fiber.
3. Odors that return
If a smell comes back days after a professional cleaning, the source is usually deep in the pad or subfloor. At that point the pad typically has to go, and often the carpet with it.
4. The pad has broken down
Walk across the room. If you can feel the floor through the carpet, or it feels lumpy or crunchy in places, the pad has collapsed or deteriorated. Worn pad also makes carpet wear out faster on top.
5. Water damage
Carpet soaked by clean water and dried quickly can often be saved, though the pad usually needs replacing. Carpet that stayed wet, or was soaked by dirty water, generally should be replaced. If water is coming in now, call our 24/7 water damage line.
When repair beats replacement
Not every problem means new carpet:
- Ripples and waves: fixed by re-stretching.
- A burn, bleach spot or pet damage in one area: patched with matching carpet.
- A split seam or frayed stair nose: repaired.
If the rest of the carpet is in good shape, repair costs a fraction of replacing it.
If you do replace it
Use it as a chance to ask whether carpet is still the right floor for the room. Bedrooms and stairs usually stay carpet; kitchens-adjacent family rooms, basements and rentals are often better with luxury vinyl plank. And pay attention to the pad. It decides how the new carpet feels and how long it lasts.
